Team Secrets of the Navy SEALs

Reviewed by: Dr. Larry S. Doyle, Director of Missions, Piedmont Baptist Association, Greensboro, NC.

Every pastor and minister at one time or another is faced with the challenge of building a ministry team. Sometimes you inherit a team from a predecessor and other times, you must build a new one from scratch. In either case, we can learn a lot from looking at examples of great teams. The “Navy SEALs” are recognized around the world as the best of the best. Since the beginning of this elite military unit in World War II only eight thousand men have been allowed to join. Team Secrets of the Navy SEALs is written especially for those who desire to develop efficient, effective teams. Whether it is business or ministry, teamwork is critical today. We desire to have well-organized, competent, resourceful people working with us. This book explores both the characteristics of a great team and the qualities of effective leadership. Here are six invaluable “team principles” I gleaned from this book:

1. How we handle our mistakes and learn from them define who we are.

2. Team leadership has a “shelf-life” therefore you never stop developing yourself or your team.

3. Accountability is paramount and necessary for an effective team.

4. We will push (encourage) one another to excel.

5. The safety and welfare of the team is paramount to personal gain.

6. Trust is essential and integral to the success and cohesion of the team.

Practicing Greatness: Seven Disciplines of Spiritual Leaders

Author: Reggie McNeal
Publisher: A Leadership Network Publication

This book is practical and powerful for anyone who aspires to move from being a good leader to being a great leader. Reggie McNeal presents a laser-focused treatment of the essence of great leadership, and the seven spiritual disciplines required of great leaders. In my opinion, this book is a must-read for anyone who desires to reach a higher level of commitment and excellence in leadership. As I read this book, it seemed as though every chapter was written with me in mind. McNeal shows how great spiritual leaders are committed to certain "habits of the heart and mind." I highly recommend this book for every person thinking about becoming a minister, or considering serving in a leadership role in the local church. It is a book that focuses on both the character, and the competence of great leaders.
